Modern Entertainer’s Backyard Retreat by Earthscape
Faced with an odd-shaped pool and an existing structure, Earthscape reimagined this backyard as a series of purposeful outdoor “rooms” that flow together while preserving open sightlines. The client’s wish list—multiple covered areas for cooking, lounging, and relaxing—drove a design of four modular pavilions, each carefully oriented to maintain connectivity and allow uninterrupted views across the yard.
1. Project Constraints & Strategic Solutions
The primary challenge was blending new amenities with the site’s quirks: a non-standard pool footprint and a pre-existing pool house. Rather than one monolithic structure, Earthscape designed smaller, angled pavilions that nestle around the pool and terrace. This approach both respects the pool’s geometry and keeps the backyard feeling spacious, ensuring each zone feels distinct without ever feeling enclosed.
2. Retrofitted Bar Pavilion
A pre-existing bar structure was seamlessly integrated by matching the new pavilions’ modern aesthetic. Earthscape refaced its base with Eramosa limestone veneer, then wrapped the frame in tongue-and-groove cedar paneling for warmth and texture. An extended countertop and built-in shelving create a polished outdoor bar ideal for cocktails at sunset, while a low back wall conceals service areas and keeps the focus on the gathering.
3. Lounge Pavilion with Fireplace & Fire Table
Adjacent to the bar, the lounge pavilion becomes the social heart of the yard. Its focal point is a bespoke Eramosa-clad fireplace, flanked by a linear fire table that casts a gentle glow across seating. A partial privacy wall anchors one side—its negative-space cutouts preserving sightlines—while the open roof beams allow starlight to filter through. Comfortable built-in benches and cushions make this pavilion an inviting refuge well into the evening.
4. Sunken Hot Tub Pavilion
At the yard’s highest point, Earthscape crafted an Azek-framed pavilion to house a sunken hot tub. The PVC deck frames the tub flush with the floor, creating a seamless transition from the home’s back door. A minimalist steel pergola overhead supports subtle rope lighting, and low-profile steps lead directly from the upper terrace. This intimate pavilion offers a private, sheltered spot for hydrotherapy or starlit soaks.
5. Evening Ambiance & Landscape Lighting
This backyard is designed as an evening entertainer’s dream. Earthscape integrated multiple lighting layers—recessed LED uplights along pavilion beams, in-deck path lights, and accent fixtures that highlight architectural angles. The fireplace and fire table glow warmly, while linear bollards cast soft pools of light around the pool’s edge. The result is a perfectly lit environment that invites gatherings at any hour.
6. Material Cohesion & Low-Maintenance Planting
Consistent use of Eramosa limestone, tongue-and-groove cedar, and sleek steel accents unifies all pavilions, while large-format porcelain pavers and fine gravel weave between them. Planting is deliberately sparse: sculptural grasses, clipped boxwoods, and low-growing evergreens soften edges without obscuring the clean lines. Drought-tolerant groundcovers fill planting pockets, requiring minimal upkeep and reinforcing the modern aesthetic.
By breaking the program into four purpose-built pavilions—bar, lounge, hot tub, and pool—Earthscape engineered a highly functional, visually cohesive backyard that transforms site constraints into compelling design opportunities. The result is a dynamic modern retreat perfectly calibrated for daytime relaxation and unforgettable evening entertainments.
