Woodland Retreat

The vision for this one of a  kind patio design was an aging stone ruin winding through the forest.  Activities for this rustic setting include late night entertaining around a  fire and mid-day reading under the shaded canopy of the pine and cedar forest.  Preserving the existing trees during construction was imperative – a  difficult task with the tight tree spacing in the forest. The solution was  dry stack stone walling and a random dry laid flagstone patio. Typical  masonry veneer walls would have required a full concrete foundation or grade  beam set on piers – this approach would have disturbed the root zone of many  of the trees. Reclaimed barn timbers, with original hand tooling marks  visible, were installed as gate posts, and the doors constructed from  reclaimed barn boards.
